Califari is on a mission to tell the story of the ever-expanding cannabis universe through art, both in the physical and virtual worlds. <\/p>\n
Founded in 2015, the California-based company\u2019s Global Artist Network makes\u00a0cannabis strain art posters<\/a>\u00a0highlighting the personality and stories behind beloved cannabis strains.\u00a0Hanging on walls across the U.S., from dispensaries and dorms to law firms, living rooms and pop-up art galleries, these posters offer\u00a0people another way to engage with cannabis culture and celebrate the plant on a deeper level.\u00a0<\/p>\n In an effort to connect with even more cannabis and art enthusiasts,\u00a0Califari<\/a>\u00a0announced in an April 6\u00a0press release<\/a>\u00a0that they are partnering with Merida Capital Holdings<\/a> to launch a new digital platform that uses non-fungible tokens, or\u00a0NFTs<\/a>, to create and distribute one-of-a-kind pieces of cannabis strain art.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe basically want to extend the cannabis art experience as far as we can,\u201d said Jason McHugh, Califari\u2019s founder and CEO, in a phone interview with Cannabis Now. \u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re so excited about doing the NFTs.\u201d<\/p>\n Simply put, NFTs are a type of cryptocurrency that are tied to digital assets, making it possible to own and sell digital art. Each digital token shows proof of ownership and authenticity. But Califari\u2019s platform will be more than an online auction site \u2013 it will also offer cannabis brand development and gamification opportunities, where users can grow and breed their own digital cannabis.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ll be creating our own trading card universe based on strain art. What\u2019s extra exciting is that this will be a place where any cannabis brand can have a centralized place to do releases,\u201d McHugh said. \u201cThe power of collaborative marketing is a big part of what we\u2019re looking to do \u2013 to bring the digital art presence into the physical offerings of cannabis products that you would find in dispensaries.\u201d<\/p>\n Jesse Barney, founder of\u00a0Barney Design Co.,<\/a>\u00a0a west-coast creative agency delivering design solutions to cannabis brands, affirms that NFTs are a strong outlet for independent artists trying to monetize on their creativity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a very accessible currency that you can make yourself, and it\u2019s 100 percent tradeable,\u201d he said, adding that he thinks the trend is here to stay.\u00a0<\/p>\n According to McHugh, the platform\u2019s launch date is at least six months out, but Califari and Merida Capital are releasing five single-edition NFTs in the form of animated cards on 4\/20: Grand Daddy Purple<\/a> by Ron English; OG Kush<\/a> by Jesse Hernandez; Sour Diesel<\/a> by Matt Leunig; Northern Lights<\/a> by Simon Haiduk; and Pineapple Express <\/a>by KAM.<\/p>\n Named \u201cThe Genesis Series,\u201d this initial release will take place on\u00a0OpenSea<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest NFT marketplace. While a minimum bid has not been set, McHugh taps into the ethos of the cannabis community, saying it\u2019s meant to be an inclusive experience.<\/p>\n \u201cWe want these to be open. We\u2019re going to make it accessible so that anyone can buy these,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n Merida Capital Holdings, a private equity firm that invests in growth drivers within the cannabis and hemp industries, is not only providing financial support, but also connecting Califari with their broad ecosystem of cannabis companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cMerida\u2019s focus has always been identifying cutting-edge opportunities with best-in-class companies throughout the cannabis industry, and we are excited to bring Califari\u2019s impressive art catalog, which already reaches international markets, to the booming NFT space,\u201d said Mitch Baruchowitz, Managing Partner at Merida Capital Holdings.<\/p>\n As cannabis strains advance beyond just Indicas and Sativas and become more complex in an effort to create specific effects, it\u2019s only natural that cannabis strain art will evolve with this shift.
