It<br \/>\nwould be impossible for it to remain static, given the shifting realities at<br \/>\nplay in the cannabis world: the big money investors swooping in, the illicit<br \/>\nmarket veterans stifling under new constraints and the new consumers brought to<br \/>\nthe table for the first time. To quote David Bowie,<br \/>\n\u201cch-ch-ch-ch-changes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But reminders of the<br \/>\nspace cannabis used to occupy in our cultural consciousness still pop up all<br \/>\nthe time \u2014 both through anti-cannabis stigma rearing its ugly head and the occasional<br \/>\nflashes of nostalgia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s pot culture<br \/>\nnews is chock full of these kinds of throwbacks: the good, the bad and the<br \/>\ngoofy. Let\u2019s take a trip down memory lane.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Good: Blazing<br \/>\nAriZona<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>AriZona Iced Tea is the rare consumer good that seems to cost exactly as much as it should \u2014 a cent shy of one dollar for a sugary tallboy, or a few bucks more for a plastic bottle or a gallon jug. It comes in dozens of flavors that all manage to taste pretty much the same. Whoever \u201cArnold Palmer\u201d is, he\u2019s done something fantastic with lemonade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The brand conjures up<br \/>\nmemories of aimless teenage wandering, summer days and covertly smoked bowls<br \/>\nbetween babysitting jobs. What drink pairs better with a midsy suburban buzz<br \/>\nthan the AriZona\u2019s saccharine thrift?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And now, the Arizona<br \/>\nBeverage Company has made official overtures to its stoney fanbase with the announcement<br \/>\nthat they will be \u201cselling marijuana-infused gummies and drinks\u201d in partnership<br \/>\nwith a Colorado-based cannabis brand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there\u2019s the devastating caveat that this whole thing could be a doomed attempt to bolster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/arizona-iced-tea-maker-turns-to-weed-11565172124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">falling iced tea sales<\/a>, according to the Wall Street Journal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company has yet to release specifics, but keep an eye out for this addition to the <a href=\"\/the-potential-promise-of-the-cannabis-beverage-market\/\">cannabis beverage market<\/a>, if only for sentimental value.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Bad: Ohio Politician<br \/>\nBlames Marijuana for Gun Violence<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>On Aug. 4, Ohio state<br \/>\nrepresentative Candice Keller caught heat on Facebook for a post she made in<br \/>\nthe wake of the mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In it, the Republican<br \/>\nrepresentative blames America\u2019s gun violence epidemic on a variety of factors,<br \/>\nincluding video games, drag queens, Obama and \u201cthe acceptance of recreational<br \/>\nmarijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of her\u2026 colorful commentary, Keller has faced pressure to resign, although it seems unlikely she\u2019ll be forced to do so. According to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/news\/local\/dayton-shooting-due-family-breakdown-gay-marriage-video-games-state-lawmaker-says\/jf8XNJPSfKFl13yggzTFgM\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dayton Daily News<\/a>, Keller has a history of inflammatory opinions: she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/03\/26\/butler-co-lawmaker-mocks-teen-gun-control-activists-doritos-eating-video-game-players\/457946002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mocked the teenage school shooting survivors<\/a> from Parkland, Florida in front of a crowd of guns rights activists in 2018, and decried the removal of Confederate monuments in 2017 in another Facebook post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The good news: It looks<br \/>\nlike very few people are taking her ideas seriously, the data doesn\u2019t support<br \/>\nher claims \u2014 and she has since deleted the post.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Goofy: Billy Ray<br \/>\nCyrus\u2019s \u2018Old Town Road\u2019 Reveal<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019re even remotely<br \/>\nin tune with The Culture, you\u2019ve definitely heard viral mastermind Lil Nas X\u2019s<br \/>\n\u201cOld Town Road.\u201d You\u2019ve also probably heard at least one of the \u201cOld Town Road\u201d<br \/>\nremixes, even if it\u2019s just because they were playing it in Rite Aid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But whether you have<br \/>\nevery twangy, tongue-in-cheek bar memorized or you\u2019re the person begging your<br \/>\nfriends to surrender the aux and drop the novelty rap, you probably didn\u2019t<br \/>\nexpect to learn that a cheeky weed reference was scrubbed from Billy Ray<br \/>\nCyrus\u2019s verse on\u00a0\u201cOld Town Road (Remix).\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In an interview with<br \/>\nmusic outlet Taste of Country, Cyrus revealed his harrowing censorship<br \/>\nexperience as follows: \u201cFor some reason, I<br \/>\nimmediately thought it was funny to say, \u2018Baby\u2019s got a habit: diamond rings and<br \/>\nmarijuana.\u2019 See, it is funny. They said, \u2018Everything but the marijuana.\u2019 [His<br \/>\nco-writer] said, \u2018How about Fendi sports bra?\u2019 I thought, \u2018It\u2019s probably good<br \/>\nbecause I don\u2019t know what that is.\u2019 Boom, that kinda happened, we rolled with<br \/>\nit in minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First of all: \u201cBaby\u2019s got a habit: diamond rings and marijuana\u201d is a line that would have changed <a href=\"\/instagram-tweaks-cannabis-influencers\/\">Instagram bios<\/a> <em>around the world<\/em>. Second of all, it\u2019s striking how antiquated this edit feels. Is it not 2019? Artists can\u2019t say \u201cmarijuana\u201d on the radio?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Cyrus doesn\u2019t seem particularly upset. Why would he be: the song is his highest-charting single ever, sitting at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/chart-beat\/8507162\/old-town-road-lil-nas-x-billy-ray-cyrus-hot-100-number-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seventeen weeks<\/a>.
