{"id":31348,"date":"2018-12-12T12:41:43","date_gmt":"2018-12-12T20:41:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2018\/12\/12\/farm-bill-set-to-legalize-industrial-hemp\/"},"modified":"2018-12-12T14:45:38","modified_gmt":"2018-12-12T22:45:38","slug":"farm-bill-set-to-legalize-industrial-hemp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2018\/12\/12\/farm-bill-set-to-legalize-industrial-hemp\/","title":{"rendered":"Farm Bill Set to Legalize Industrial Hemp"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell whipped out a pen made out of the cannabis sativa plant and signed the 2018 Farm Bill, which includes a provision that will create a legal hemp industry nationwide, after it passed the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Ceremony aside, if McConnell is successful at politics, following a final vote in the House of Representatives, Donald Trump will also sign the same bill, the 2018 Farm Bill, with any kind of pen \u2014 magic marker will do \u2014 so that 42 million Americans can eat.<\/p>\n<p>If Trump does that, a much smaller percentage of Americans will also be able to grow cannabis in order to turn it into rope, soap, seeds or CBD drops for lattes in Brooklyn. Looking forward to voting YES on this bill &amp; sending to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@POTUS<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8ypwBebXy7\">pic.twitter.com\/8ypwBebXy7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Leader McConnell (@senatemajldr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/senatemajldr\/status\/1072267971278635008?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 10, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>\u201cHemp\u201d is a way of saying \u201ccannabis sativa with 0.3 percent or less THC.\u201d Since\u00a0hemp\u00a0is still cannabis sativa, for many years,\u00a0hemp\u00a0had the distinction of being the only plant Americans could buy, sell and import but could not grow.<\/p>\n<p>That changed in some states under pilot programs authorized under an older Farm Bill,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/wireStory\/mcconnells-year-end-congress-legalize-hemp-59487430\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">but thanks in part to the influence of McConnell<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 who sees\u00a0hemp\u00a0production as a decent alternative to tobacco, the main cash crop in Kentucky \u2014 this Farm Bill would remove\u00a0hemp\u00a0from the Controlled Substances Act.<\/p>\n<p>The main purpose of the 10-year, $867 billion Farm Bill is funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), more popularly known as food stamps. About 80 percent of the Farm Bill funds food stamps, which is why the Farm Bill is arguably a much bigger deal in impoverished cities than it is in impoverished farmland (though since people are on food stamps in the country, too, maybe it\u2019s a wash).<\/p>\n<p>The president had pushed for a Farm Bill that included stricter working requirements for poor people receiving food subsidies. Lucky for them, the Senate didn\u2019t listen, and the Farm Bill sent back to the House of Representatives for a vote includes the\u00a0Hemp\u00a0Farming Act and does not force people,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/snap\/characteristics-supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program-households-fiscal-year-2013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mostly kids and the elderly, who receive an average of $271<\/a>\u00a0from the government to go out and get jobs in order to eat.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Hemp\u00a0Farming Act has new resonance thanks almost entirely to\u00a0<a href=\"\/?s=CBD\">CBD<\/a>, which \u2014 thanks to cannabis-derived CBD \u2014 is being touted as a cure-all wellness product.<\/p>\n<p>Will Trump also flash a\u00a0hemp\u00a0pen? Probably not, but he\u2019ll probably sign the bill.
