The world\u2019s media flocked to the easternmost point of the continent to get the iconic shot of Canada\u2019s first legal sale.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Linton, CEO of Tweed\u2019s parent company\u00a0<a href=\"\/tag\/canopy-growth\/\">Canopy Growth<\/a>, braved the fall weather of the North Atlantic to run the till for the first sale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA little bit of that hurricane thing made it interesting, but we just had to be here,\u201d Linton told the CBC prior to making the first sale, noting the gloomy weather that set the stage for the historic night.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Well, that was fun. Power\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/legal-marijuana-st-johns-first-sales-1.4865855\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the CBC<\/a>\u00a0that it\u2019s been a dream of his to make history and be the first person to buy a legal gram of cannabis in Canada. \u201cAnd finally I\u2019m here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Not long after the sale, Linton congratulated Power telling him he made history. Power was quick to cut him off saying, \u201cWe all made history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday afternoon, Power spoke exclusively with Cannabis Now about how his adventure went down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew the 17th was going to be the day, I knew a month ago I\u2019d go,\u201d Power said over the phone from Newfoundland. \u201cI knew in all my 30 years smoking cannabis that I was going to be first. So when I heard the date, I said I\u2019m going to line up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Powell\u2019s friends told him he may not be first, as they predicting the crowds would be substantial.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">If you think the lineup inside was wild\u2026have a look at this! There was nobody in line and I just stood in line and did my thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While he waited, Power faced 70-kilometer wind gusts, but at least it was nine degrees above freezing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was cold but I didn\u2019t really feel it, the adrenaline of the moment kept me warm,\u201d said Power.<\/p>\n<p>Three and a half hours later, Tweed opened the doors.<\/p>\n<p>Power said he was pleased to lead 35 million Canadians into the era of legal cannabis and noted that this is the culmination of decades and decades of work of many people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made history, we made history,\u201d he said. \u201cCanadian activists, they all made history. It all came together in one moment and I\u2019m just so glad I was the person that was there to be in that moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Power\u2019s purchase was a Chemdawg offshoot strain called Donegal. While it sounds nice, he says he won\u2019t be smoking it. His plan is to frame it with a dated plaque, simply reading, \u201cWe won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Early on Wednesday morning, a few hours after Power\u2019s purchase, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also chimed in on the historic nature of the day. Trudeau has championed Canada\u2019s legalization effort since he took the reins in Ottawa in 2016, and as he noted on Twitter, this is a big stamp on a campaign promise.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Profits out of the hands of criminals. Last night, the captain of the Edmonton Oilers, Connor McDavid, spoke on the league\u2019s overall blanket ban on pot in light of the day\u2019s events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI say this more talking about the CBD side of it, obviously: You\u2019d be stupid not to at least look into it,\u201d McDavid said. \u201cWhen your body\u2019s sore like it is sometimes, you don\u2019t want to be taking pain stuff and taking Advil all the time. There\u2019s obviously better ways to do it\u2026 You\u2019re seeing a lot of smart guys look into it. You\u2019re seeing a lot of really smart doctors look into it.
