Across the country, mothers have pushed forward laws \u2014 even in conservative states \u2014 allowing for the use of THC or CBD for children with severe epilepsy and other illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>One such \u201cshe-ro\u201d is Heather Shuker of the Pennsylvania Medical Cannabis Society, who began as an advocate for her daughter Hannah after cannabis drastically reduced the number of seizures she suffered. California Senator <a href=\"https:\/\/cannabisnow.com\/tag\/dianne-feinstein\/\">Dianne Feinstein<\/a>, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/news\/politics-government\/congress\/article210212224.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just reversed her longstanding policy<\/a> of opposing cannabis reform, said her views changed after meetings with constituents, particularly those with young children who have benefited from medical cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>But the movement of mothers advocating for marijuana isn\u2019t only a recent phenomenon about giving children access to medical cannabis. Here are seven mothers, including celebrities, writers and musicians, who have spoken publicly about their own consumption of marijuana and the positive effects they\u2019ve seen from the plant.<\/p>\n<h4>Maya Angelou<\/h4>\n<p>Poetess Maya Angelou wrote about her experiences with marijuana in\u00a0\u201cGather Together in My Name,\u201d the second installment of her autobiography, after the acclaimed\u00a0\u201cI Know Why the Caged Bird Sings\u201d<i>.\u00a0<\/i>Angelou, who had a drastically difficult childhood and became a single mother in her teens, wrote: \u201cSmoking grass eased the strain for me\u2026. From a natural stiffness I melted into a grinning tolerance. Walking on the streets became high adventure, eating my mother\u2019s huge dinners an opulent entertainment, and playing with my son was side-cracking hilarity. For the first time, life amused me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Melissa Etheridge<\/h4>\n<p>Musician <a href=\"https:\/\/cannabisnow.com\/the-melissa-etheridge-interview-this-is-m-e\/\">Melissa Etheridge<\/a> advanced the cannabis cause when she told Dateline NBC in 2005 that she smoked medicinal cannabis to help with the side effects of chemotherapy during her treatment for breast cancer. Etheridge came out in favor of recreational cannabis at a 2010 press conference in Los Angeles. \u201cI don\u2019t want to look like a criminal to my children anymore,\u201d she stated. \u201cI want them to know this is a choice you make as a responsible adult.\u201d At a Grammy Museum-sponsored Concert for Social Justice in 2015, she pronounced that the cannabis revolution \u201cis being won by middle-aged women.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Ruth Bergner<\/h4>\n<p>Longtime cannabis user and grandmother Ruth Bergner outed herself in her 2005 autobiography, \u201cI Smoke Pot with My Family: Speaking Up at 85.\u201d \u201cWith just one puff, I am instantly more open, communicative, loving and forgiving,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI believe that, when used wisely, this substance supports us in learning to be more loving and emotionally sound human beings.\u201d These lessons are all ones that many mothers hope to pass on to their children.<\/p>\n<h4>Lea Grover<\/h4>\n<p>In 2015, Lea Grover, the mother of one-year-old twins, wrote an article for Good Housekeeping magazine titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodhousekeeping.com\/life\/parenting\/a33461\/marijuana-mom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marijuana Makes Me a Better Mother<\/a>,\u201d in which she recounted how she benefited from an increased ability to empathize brought on by marijuana, as well dealing with her \u201cparenthood-induced anxiety\u201d more safely and effectively with cannabis than Xanax.<\/p>\n<h4>Charlize Theron<\/h4>\n<p>Charlize Theron, who recently told Jimmy Kimmel that she and her mother successfully tried edibles to help them sleep, is currently appearing both in the movie \u201cGringo,\u201d a boyish romp about a mythical marijuana pill, and in a critically-acclaimed performance for her realistic depiction of the challenges of motherhood in \u201cTully.\u201d She has two children that she co-parents with her mother.<\/p>\n<h4>Susan Sarandon<\/h4>\n<p>Susan Sarandon, who has admitted to using pot as far back as 1992, has increasingly become an advocate for marijuana and criminal justice reform. Sarandon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/entertainment\/style-trends\/info-01-2014\/susan-sarandon-aarp-magazine-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> AARP\u2019s magazine in 2014 that, \u201cI would much rather my kids smoke weed than drink, except that it\u2019s illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Whoopi Goldberg<\/h4>\n<p>Whoopi Goldberg, who has recently entered the cannabis industry with her own line of cannabis products geared toward women and mothers, said it was her daughter who suggested that she smoke marijuana to treat the headaches she was struggling with. \u201cWhen my daughter\u00a0gave me a vape pen, I realized that I could\u00a0relegate it to where I needed it to be,\u201d Goldberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.com\/celebrity\/news\/a19922\/whoopi-goldberg-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Marie Claire.\u00a0\u201cAnd I would talk to my older grandkids\u00a0in their 20s, and they\u2019d say they use\u00a0weed to stop cramps.\u201d Goldberg has also spoken up about the need for more women and mothers in the cannabis industry, saying, \u201cIf you had women running the weed market, I think there\u2019d be lots of different products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>TELL US,<\/b> are you a mother?
