{"id":24673,"date":"2018-03-22T05:00:38","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T13:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2018\/03\/22\/top-canadian-pot-producer-wins-deal-with-pharma-giant\/"},"modified":"2018-03-23T00:48:43","modified_gmt":"2018-03-23T08:48:43","slug":"top-canadian-pot-producer-wins-deal-with-pharma-giant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2018\/03\/22\/top-canadian-pot-producer-wins-deal-with-pharma-giant\/","title":{"rendered":"Top Canadian Pot Producer Wins Deal With Pharma Giant"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>A business alliance that seems to symbolize the fast pace of the cannabis industry\u2019s globalization is wedding a Canadian cultivator with one of the world\u2019s largest drug and agro-chemical companies.<\/p>\n<p>The firm\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tilray.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tilray<\/a>, one of the top Licensed Producers under the Canadian medical marijuana program, on March 18 announced that it has signed a binding \u201cletter of intent\u201d to form a \u201cstrategic partnership\u201d with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandoz.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sandoz Canada<\/a>, an arm of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandoz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sandoz International GmbH<\/a>. The Switzerland-based giant is, in turn, a wing of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.novartis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Novartis International<\/a>, the fourth-largest pharmaceutical company in the world by revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/cannabis\/big-pharmas-first-foray-into-cannabis-arrives-with-sandoz-tilray-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Post reports<\/a> that the partnership will see co-branded products, joint research and development, and Sandoz Canada\u2019s sales department working to place non-smokable Tilray products in pharmacies and hospitals across the country \u2014 pending regulatory approval. The Financial Post hails the arrangement as \u201cthe first deal between a major pharmaceutical company and a Canadian cannabis producer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tilray, headquartered in the Vancouver port city of Nanaimo, is owned by Seattle cannabis-industry investment firm\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateerholdings.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Privateer Holdings<\/a>. In 2014, it became the tenth company to secure a license under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Canada<\/a>\u2018s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/laws.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/regulations\/SOR-2016-230\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tilray is also the first company worldwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20171107006853\/en\/Tilray%A8-Exports-Medical-Cannabis-Genetics-European-Union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to legally export medical cannabis<\/a> into the European Union. It achieved this position after winning a Good Manufacturing Practice certification under\u00a0European Medicines Agency\u00a0standards in December 2016, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.in-pharmatechnologist.com\/Article\/2017\/02\/16\/Tilray-grows-capacity-at-North-America-s-only-GMP-cannabis-facility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the In-Pharma trade publication noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A Tilray <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20180318005070\/en\/Tilray%A8-Forms-Strategic-Alliance-Leading-Pharmaceutical-Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a> calls the pact with Sandoz a \u201cmajor milestone in the recognition of medical cannabis and cannabinoids as conventional medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It boasts that Tilray \u201ccurrently supplies tens of thousands of patients with high-quality, cGMP-certified products in ten countries spanning five continents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tilray\u2019s global operations are expanding fast. Last year, it received a license to cultivate cannabis and process medications in Portugal. The company is hoping to begin operations in the Iberian peninsula country this year, according to a February\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2018\/02\/27\/1396112\/0\/en\/EnWave-Expands-Agreement-with-Tilray-Providing-for-Cannabis-Drying-in-Portugal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>. Tilray will now be cultivating at the\u00a0BIOCANT Research Park\u00a0in Portugal\u2019s coastal town of Cantanhede, as well as its own Vancouver Island facilities. An indoor laboratory and genetics bank is already complete at Tilray\u2019s BIOCANT center, with an expansive greenhouse under construction. Tilray products are now available in Germany, the Czech Republic, Croatia and other European countries.<\/p>\n<p>Tilray also just became the first company to export medical cannabis products to South Africa \u201cfor nationwide distribution to qualified patients through pharmacies.\u201d A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20180228005358\/en\/Tilray%C2%AE-Exports-Medical-Cannabis-South-Africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>\u00a0from the company noted that this marks the first such exports to anywhere on the continent of Africa.
