Colombia is perhaps best known among most people for the failed War on Drugs, thanks to Netflix\u2019 internationally acclaimed \u2018Narcos\u2019 which debuted in 2015.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Whereas the whole world was introduced to the horrors of a failed War on Drugs in the beautiful country of Colombia<\/a>, the country itself wanted to move on from a war that got<\/span> 220.000 people killed, millions of people homeless<\/span><\/a> and billions of dollars wasted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cannabis Politics<\/h2>\n

Legislation in 2012 had already decriminalized private use<\/a>, possession of up to 20 grams and 20 plants for personal use. 3 years later in 2015, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos legalized medical cannabis.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Nobel Peace Prize winner of 2016, announced in a nationally televised address<\/a> he signed legislation, allowing licenses to be granted for the possession of seeds, cannabis plants and cannabis.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re now two years further and Cannabis News Network traveled down to Colombia for an exclusive report on the state of medical cannabis<\/a> in Colombia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cannabis Valhalla<\/h2>\n

The three part series called Colombia Gold<\/em><\/a> features a wide variety of experts including Martin Jelsma (Transnational Institute), Andr\u00e9s L\u00f3pez (Director National Narcotics Control), Ricardo Vargas (Director de Acci\u00f3n Andina Colombia<\/a>), Diana Paola Valenzuela (Institute of Studies for Development and Peace<\/a>), Julian Caicedo (Anandamida Gardens<\/a>) and more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fair Trade Cannabis?<\/h2>\n

We take a look at the history of cannabis in Colombia<\/a>, the War on Drugs, medical cannabis licenses and the consequences for the indigenous people. Especially the latter two are dubious, as the first license was handed to a<\/span> privately owned Canadian medical cannabis<\/span><\/a> company,\u00a0Khiron. Among others, the company has even employed a former DEA Chief<\/a> of Pharmaceutical Investigations to its advisory board.<\/span><\/p>\n

The licenses granted also allow companies to export legal medicinal cannabis<\/a>. Quite a change looking at recent history.<\/span><\/p>\n
