\u201cYou\u2019ve got a real type of thing going down, gettin\u2019 down\/ There\u2019s a whole lot of rhythm going round.\u201d \u2013 Parliament\u2019s \u201cGive Up the Funk\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n I<\/span>n the pantheon of musical influencers \u2014 those\u00a0whose artistic impact has shaped the music of multiple generations \u2014\u00a0George Clinton joins James Brown and Sly Stone as one of the foremost forefathers of funk.<\/p>\n As the leader of Parliament and Funkadelic in the 1970s and early 1980s, Clinton was the architect of a whole new type of sound known as the P-Funk. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, Clinton continues to work on his own music and contribute his voice to projects from a bevy of fiery new politically minded artists, including rapper and songwriter Kendrick Lamar.<\/p>\n \u201cDr. Funkenstein\u201d will be the first to tell you how he used cannabis to kick harder drugs \u2014\u00a0nowadays, he says he doesn\u2019t need much to keep the groove alive. We caught up with the \u201cStar Child\u201d himself to discuss extraterrestrial grooves, how he enjoys his funk and where the Mothership is headed next.<\/p>\n Cannabis Now:<\/strong> Your music exists within its own classification. How do you describe P-Funk?<\/p>\n George Clinton:<\/strong> It\u2019s the music that will save your life whenever you need it. Funk is a way of life. It\u2019s a movement and it\u2019s the music.<\/p>\n What benefits have you found in medical marijuana? Does it enhance your musical process?<\/strong><\/p>\n Oh, it helped me get rid of my crack habit [laughs]. It\u2019s the best medicine to alleviate it.<\/p>\n How is it the best medicine?<\/strong><\/p>\n I mean, it takes care of all of it \u2014 medicinal, mental, recreational \u2014\u00a0it takes care of the steps you need for well being. It\u2019s a whole thing you got, medically, psychologically and just plain havin\u2019 fun.<\/p>\n I know you have a close relationship with CRAFT collective<\/a> here in California; do you have a particular strain that you enjoy?<\/strong><\/p>\n I don\u2019t even know the names of anything, you know? The names change so fast. I just like good weed. You\u2019re supposed to be able to get high off of weed, but it don\u2019t take that much for me. You know? I like the oil. Give me my pen and I\u2019m satisfied. I done been through all the other things, it\u2019s very easy for me to stay satisfied.<\/p>\n How do you consume cannabis?<\/strong><\/p>\n I do the oil, the dab<\/a>, the wax and the plant \u2014 I do all of it. The edibles? I don\u2019t do that too much because I get carried away with taste and I forget that it\u2019s got THC<\/a> in it, so I have to be careful with the edibles.<\/p>\n Who influences you? What musical artists are you listening to today?<\/strong><\/p>\n Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Kendrick Lamar, most of those California funksters, Childish Gambino.<\/p>\n There\u2019s a strong sense of political activism in many of your songs. In the title track of Chocolate City you say, \u201cThey still call it the White House\/ but that\u2019s a temporary condition.\u201d How are you coping with the current Trump administration?<\/strong><\/p>\n Oh that\u2019s funny. It\u2019s definitely different than Chocolate City. I think [Obama] left enough funk in the White House so we\u2019ll be alright. They left enough funk that will protect the White House. You know [Trump is] screwin\u2019 himself, he ain\u2019t gonna to be there long. He\u2019s gonna step on his own tail.<\/p>\n You were just in the studio, what are you working on?<\/strong><\/p>\n I\u2019m doing a Parliament album<\/a> and it\u2019s called \u201cMedicaid Fraud Dog.\u201d It goes right good with all this Medicaid sh*t that going on with Obamacare. It\u2019s coming out right on time with all this bullsh*t that\u2019s going on: drugs and pharmaceutical companies and insurance. It\u2019s a whole thing about the insurance and the pharmaceuticals and the government and then they cut everything from the Medicaid.
