{"id":18541,"date":"2017-08-12T05:10:01","date_gmt":"2017-08-12T13:10:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2017\/08\/12\/lighting-up-with-emerald-mountain\/"},"modified":"2017-08-13T01:18:43","modified_gmt":"2017-08-13T09:18:43","slug":"lighting-up-with-emerald-mountain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2017\/08\/12\/lighting-up-with-emerald-mountain\/","title":{"rendered":"Lighting Up With Emerald Mountain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dawg-Walker-Emerald-Mountain-1.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"620\"> <\/p>\n<h4>Oregon photographer takes vivid cannabis photographs by paying close attention to his environment.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdcp-drop-cap-default\">C<\/span>annabis photography is basically a zero sum game: you either get a vivid encapsulation of the natural <a href=\"https:\/\/cannabisnow.com\/as-the-grass-grows\/\">magic and majesty of the world\u2019s most controversial plant<\/a> or an unremarkable snapshot of some dried up flowers.<\/p>\n<p>And for a masterful expression of the professional end of the spectrum, you can\u2019t do much better than the work of Martin Henderson \u2014 the man behind the curtain at Emerald Mountain Media, which produces some truly exquisite pot pictures.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24549\" src=\"http:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dawg-Walker-Emerald-Mountain.jpg\" alt=\"A perfectly lit stem of the Dawgwalker plant on a black background.\" width=\"400\" height=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Henderson has been fascinated with photography for most of his life and has been shooting professionally for roughly eight years.<\/p>\n<p>For him, what makes a photograph \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018bad\u2019 boils down to a single element \u2014 the one that makes photography possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotography is all about capturing light,\u201d he said. \u201cEveryone focuses on \u2018you got to have this gear,\u2019 but the biggest thing I find that differentiates people\u2019s work is their attention to lighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said his personal style when it comes to capturing cannabis is rooted in an exploration of contrasting shadows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI use two different angles of light to bring out those textures,\u201d he said. \u201cI try to keep the lights diffuse and soft enough that I don\u2019t blow out the trichomes, cause those are really reflective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24551\" src=\"http:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Purple-Punch-Emerald-Mountain.jpg\" alt=\"A stem of Purple Punch reaches up towards the sky.\" width=\"400\" height=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This technique lends depth and complexity to his bud portraits, which he says emphasize the structure, color and variations of a strain. But some of his most compelling shots are of living outdoor cannabis plants shot in situ with all natural lighting.<\/p>\n<p>My personal favorite \u2014 a praying mantis delicately perched on a blooming cola \u2014 was the product of a happy accident and a little cooperation from nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was one of my plants I was growing outside, and we saw that a praying mantis was on there,\u201d Martin said. \u201cSo I grabbed her and put her on the nug there. She posed for me and I took the shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to selecting \u201cmodels\u201d for his cannabis photography, Henderson said he previously relied on personal connections, often photographing his own plants or those of a friend.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24553\" src=\"http:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Forum-Cookies-Emerald-Mountain.jpg\" alt=\"A plant of Form Cookies has flowers bursting forth in front of a black background.\" width=\"400\" height=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As a born-and-raised <a href=\"https:\/\/cannabisnow.com\/?s=oregon\">Oregon<\/a> native with the right friends, finding quality crops to shoot wasn\u2019t too difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cannabis industry is a pretty closed world,\u201d he said. \u201cIt really is \u2018who you know,\u2019 and then once you get in the field and other people see you.
