L<\/span>ast week, late-night television host and opinion influencer Stephen Colbert, a onetime purveyor of somewhat unreal news that was nonetheless more informative than \u201cactual\u201d news, declared our era of \u201cfake news\u201d dead.<\/p>\n If only that were so.<\/p>\n In the past year, \u201cfake news\u201d has appeared on Facebook in the form of outright false statements, created solely because they\u2019d be shared like a bad stock tip.<\/p>\n Since taking office, Trump and his followers have deployed the term anytime a news story that\u2019s the least bit critical appears. They cried \u201cfake news\u201d every time a story connecting the Trump organization to Russian influencers appeared \u2014 and since Russian agents absolutely contacted Donald Trump Jr. last year in order to tip the election in his father\u2019s favor, \u201cfake news\u201d turned out to be real news.<\/p>\n Ergo, fake news is now dead, Colbert reasoned<\/a>. Long live fake news.<\/p>\n\n Like everywhere else in this reality, the cannabis world is awash in fake news. A key issue in the marijuana legalization debate is what impact the end of prohibition has on the children. According to legalization\u2019s foes, legal weed means more kids smoking pot than ever.<\/p>\n Today in fake news: @washingtonpost<\/a> blog reports “drop” in use in CO when in fact it went up. Around the time when Donald Jr. was getting ready to self-publish emails proving \u201cTrump Russia\u201d was as real as a special investigator<\/a>, another study <\/a>showing no link between legalization and youth marijuana use was published.<\/p>\n As NORML reported<\/a>, federal investigators compared marijuana use rates among teens in 2002 to those in 2014, after legalization in Colorado and Washington had been in place for more than a full year. Legalization did indeed have an effect \u2014 it dropped, significantly.<\/p>\n Across the board, cannabis use among teens dropped 17 percent, according to the study. And problematic cannabis use \u2014 that is, a marijuana habit that interfered with school, relationships, work, or other commitments \u2014 dropped by 25 percent. <\/em><\/p>\n This would seem to show that legalization advocate\u2019s oft-repeated argument that legalization is good for keeping weed out of kids\u2019 hands \u2014 because \u201ddrug dealers don\u2019t card\u201d \u2014 could be taken one step further. If you want kids to smoke less weed, legalize it \u2014 the data shows they\u2019ll smoke it less.<\/p>\n It\u2019s past time to retire the canard that legalization leads more kids to smoke weed. It doesn\u2019t.
