Hawaii\u2019s largest workers\u2019 compensation insurer is canceling insurance policies for seven medical marijuana dispensaries preparing to open this summer.<\/p>\n
Hawaii Employers\u2019 Mutual Insurance Co. (HEMIC) \u2013 citing concerns over criminal liability since cannabis is illegal at the federal level \u2013 notified the dispensaries Wednesday their policies will be canceled in 30 days and premiums refunded, the\u00a0Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.<\/p>\n
HEMIC said its board of directors unanimously agreed to the decision after two independent legal opinions determined the company would have \u201cpotential exposure for criminal liability\u201d based on federal law.<\/p>\n
